1. Could you introduce yourself ? Mentioning the details about your life that you are comfortable with.
My name is AM. And I sell perfume for a living.
2. Why did you agree to this interview, and how did finding out that it will focus on “Navigating Yaqeen (یقین)” make you feel?
I felt neutral after learning about what we will be discussing. This is a safe space.
3. What do you understand as the meaning of ‘Yaqeen (Arabic: یقین)‘? And who taught you this definition?
Not feeling doubtful. Or having a solid sense of direction and trust in the direction you are heading in life.
Growing up, I heard the word Yaqeen a lot, and I sort of consolidated this definition based on those different accounts and reading books, the Qur’an, etc.
4. Can you think of a time when you went a long period without knowing how to deal with a situation? What were some coping mechanisms for you?
A scarring event in my life had to do with confusion about a goal I had but did not seem to have a clear methodology for reaching it. It was in 2019. I had a dream recently about the issue earlier this year, 2024, and have since had it interpreted for me.
Throughout this time, I was very confused and kept myself going through iman (faith) as a Muslim, as well as doing good acts of service in society. I also reflected (and continue to reflect) a lot on how I can be a better person to people around me.
5. What is a quote that comes to mind for you when you think about making a life decision?
“And the next life is much better for you than this life.”
That is, the rewards of your good works done throughout your life can only benefit you later on. It humbles me to think about this.
6. How important is your environment in your decision-making? (For example, do you feel more certain of yourself at home vs. an unfamiliar place)
Very important. I feel most at ease and certain when I am indoors or in quiet spaces with my small circle of friends.
7. If you consider Yaqeen (Arabic: یقین) as a battery, How would you advise others to charge it up?
Listening to and reciting the Qur’an.
Also, Learning about history and how people who have struggled with similar challenges dealt with it. If you are religious, check out the hadith by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
And finally, being of service to humanity. Give to charity.
8. Do you think it is possible to make a good decision based purely on Yaqeen ? What if you are acting based on misinformation?
To address the latter question first, a good practice to avoid acting on misinformation is to leave what does not concern you alone, not rushing to involve yourself in other people’s business.
As for the first part of the question, I think this Yaqeen has to be combined with faith and doing your homework to learn what your options are. If you get to a point where you have done all you can about an issue in your life, stop thinking about it and wait to see what the outcomes of your effort will yield. Tawakkul is important.
