If I were white…

If I were white...Why I wrote this:

I am a second-generation immigrant who grew up in an environment that suffered quiet racism. This racism developed into an internalization of otherness and a longing to become the dominant culture. However, in writing this piece, I realized that even if I were a part of it, that it would never be possible. This “if” could not even be imagined because the reality is that it would never happen. The title follows with a long blank symbolizing this reality. It emphasizes the power of the white, blank space — this white space reflects the power of the white community in which they need no words to explain their existence.
