the diamonds in your eyes

The diamonds in your eyes
Faltered, and shattered
And broke into so many pieces
I couldn’t pick them all up

You turned away from me
Told me to leave
As your fist bundled up
Nails clenching into the softness
Of your palm, jawline taut

I told myself I would
Never
Be afraid of you
But the lie on my tongue
Feels heavy
As if it is an anchor
Carrying me deep into the sea

The spaces between my fingers
widen as the sun comes pouring
Through
But you remain in the shadows
Like a sullen prince

Why I Wrote This Piece

This submission is part of the “Write to Discover” program. This piece is an exploration of relationships that can go awry and become toxic. I tried to capture the narrator’s sense of realizing what is going on with their relationship and how their partner is too dark for them.
